Abstract:
  MEMS devices, such as micro pressure sensors, micro accelerometers, micro gyros, microphones and FBAR filters, have been successfully applied to automotive industry, consumer & communication electronics (smartphones, tablet computers, video game consoles), etc. In recent years, bio-MEMS and Microfluidics have also been rapidly developing in new frontiers of medical diagnostics, optofluidics, nanofluidics and agribiotechnology. The applications of these devices gradually change from basic life science research to biohazard detection systems, in-vitro medical diagnostics systems, mobile health & implantable medical devices for hospital and home care and pharmaceutical industry. According to the market research of Yole Develpoment in 2010, the Bio-MEMS market will grow from US$1.2 Billion in 2009 to US$4.5 Billion in 2015. In this presentation, I will discuss that microfluidics and bio-MEMS have been one of the key technologies to develop new generation of DNA sequencing machines (454 Life Sciences/Roche, Illumina, Helicos Biosicence, Pacific Bioscience and Ion Torrent), DNA analysis (Caliper Life Science/Agilent, Fluidigm, etc.). I will also discuss several unique microfluidics and MEMS devices developed at HKUST including micro chaotic mixers and their application in cancer diagnostics, Giant Electrorheological Fluid-based microfluidics, micro electroporation chips, micro flow sensors for energy efficient building using CMOS MEMS technology.


About the speaker:
  Dr. Yi-Kuen Lee received his BS degree in Bio-Industrial Mechatronics Engineering Department (formerly Agricultural Machinery Engineering), National Taiwan University (NTU) in 1992. He received his MS degree in the Institute of Applied Mechanics, NTU in 1995. He went to US and obtained Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering with Major in MEMS under the guidance of Prof Chih-Ming Ho (member of Academia Sinica and US NAE) at UCLA in 2001. At UCLA, he developed a micro Particle Image Velocimetry system, a micro chaotic mixer and worked on the micro inkjet and single DNA dynamics in microfluidics projects. He was an Assistant Professor from 2001 to 2007 at HKUST. He received substantiation and was promoted to Associate Professor in July 2007. He was a Visiting Associate at Caltech Micromachining Laboratory from July 2010 to Jan 2011. Since 2011, he is also an Adjunct Professor in School of Computer & Information Engineering, Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School. His current research topics include microfluidics for enumeration of Circulation Tumor Cells (CTCs) for cancer diagnostics, microfluidics with closed-loop feedback control for optimization of Traditional Chinese Medicine, micro electroporation/electroendocytosis chips for DNA transfection, micro/nano heat transfer, micro/nano electrophoresis for large DNA molecules, micro biometric sensors, micro cell cytometer chips for environmental monitoring. He was the co-founder of the annual Nano/Micro Engineered and Molecular Systems (IEEE NEMS) conferences since 2006; Technical Program Committee (TPC) member of IEEE MEMS 2007, Kobe, Japan; TPC member of IEEE Nano 2007; TPC member of APCOT 2008, 2010 & 2012, TPC member of IEEE NEMS 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 & 2013, IEEE Transducers 2009, 2011 & 2013. He is also the Chair for the 5th International Workshop on Innovation and Commercialization of Micro & Nano Technologies (ICMAN 2011), Shenzhen, 5-8 Nov 2011. He is the Vice President of Hong Kong Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics since Mar 2012.
